Instruments and presets

Instruments in the sidebar lists sound generators. Factory instruments are grouped as Drums, Physical Models, Synths, and so on. Library holds installed and user instruments. Search filters the list.

The Instruments browser lists factory generators and rack types.

Add or replace

  • Drag an instrument onto Drop sounds here to make a new track.
  • Drop it on a track, or double-click it with the track selected, to replace that track's instrument.

Engines lists the instruments already in the project. Drag one onto Drop sounds here for another track, or into a rack for another layer.

Instrument Rack and Drum Rack create containers; Sampler plays a sample. See Racks and Samples and sounds. Double-clicking a synth while a rack is selected replaces the rack, so add layers with the rack's drop area.

Load a preset

  1. Select the synth's track.
  2. Open Presets. The list shows presets for that instrument.
  3. Click one.

A preset sets the base sound. Existing p-locks still override it on their steps.

Presets follow the selected instrument; this list belongs to Digi Drift.

Save a preset

Click the save icon in the instrument header. Save as New creates a preset with the name you enter. Overwrite replaces the preset that is currently loaded, whatever name you typed.

Presets store the sound. The project stores the music that uses it; save both.

Shape the sound

Most instruments have a source, a filter, an amplitude envelope, and modulation. Shorten the envelope for a pluck, lower the cutoff for a darker tone, and add a little resonance to bring the filter forward. Change one thing at a time.

Digi Drift’s oscillator, filter, and envelope controls shape its base sound.

Tabs in a panel switch which controls are visible, not which instrument is loaded. If chords lose notes, raise the voice count. If notes ring after release, shorten the release.
